Case Studies and Models for Online Courses

Online learning has taken root within a variety of institutional settings. Papers in this area will focus on how a different institutions have incorporated online learning into their own organizational cultures to meet the needs of various audiences.

Faculty Development and Support

Online learning is still in its first generation; it is therefore essential that faculty have access to effective professional development opportunities and appropriate course development support. Likewise, faculty and students do not work in a vacuum. A variety of program support services are required, including technical support, student services, assessment, recruiting, and infrastructure.

Faculty Roles and Rewards

Teaching in the online learning environment means more than using new tools and techniques. It can also mean changes in role, revising personal theories about teaching and learning, changed work schedules, and the need for faculty development.

Noninstructional Applications

How are faculty using online learning tools to facilitate collaborative research, international linkages, and intuitional sharing of academic expertise? This Track will focus on innovative uses of ALN to support research, service, and organizational activities.

Pedagogy

How do students learn in an online environment? This track examines various attributes of effective online learning environments.

Policies and Practices

Online learning initiatives often require institutions to develop new policies or practices on a wide range of issues that impact faculty, including intellectual property, accessibility, privacy, accreditation, office hours, and the evaluation of online teaching in tenure and promotion reviews. This track will focus on papers dealing with academic policies and practices from an institutional perspective.

Tools and Techniques

New technical tools are being developed for online learning by practitioners around the nation and the world. Papers in this track will present new tools developed to meet the needs of faculty and students at a variety of institutions.
